When to Replace Your Timing Belt — A Guide for Audi and VW Owners in Sri Lanka

Why the Timing Belt Is So Important

The timing belt synchronises your engine's crankshaft and camshaft rotation. If it snaps, the pistons and valves collide — causing catastrophic engine damage that can cost LKR 500,000+ to repair. This is not a part you can afford to ignore.

Which Engines Use Timing Belts?

In Sri Lanka, the most common belt-driven European engines are:

  • Audi/VW 2.0 TDI (CJAA, CBEA, CFFB, CFGB) — Very common in A4, A6, Passat, Golf
  • Audi/VW 1.9 TDI (BKC, BXE, BJB) — Older A4, Passat, Golf models
  • Audi/VW 2.0 TFSI (older CCTA, CAEB) — Some A4 and A5 models
  • VW 1.4 TSI (CAXA) — Golf, Polo, Jetta

Note: BMW, Mercedes, and newer VW/Audi engines typically use timing chains which last longer but are not maintenance-free.

Replacement Intervals for Sri Lanka

European manufacturers recommend timing belt replacement at:

  • Audi/VW 2.0 TDI: Every 120,000 km or 5 years (whichever comes first)
  • Audi/VW 1.9 TDI: Every 90,000 km or 4 years
  • VW 1.4 TSI: Every 90,000 km or 5 years

However, in Sri Lanka's hot climate, we recommend reducing these by 20%:

  • 2.0 TDI: Replace at 100,000 km or 4 years
  • 1.9 TDI: Replace at 75,000 km or 3.5 years
  • 1.4 TSI: Replace at 75,000 km or 4 years

What Should Be Replaced Together

A proper timing belt service should include the full kit:

  • Timing belt
  • Tensioner pulley
  • Idler pulleys (if applicable)
  • Water pump (always — it is driven by the timing belt)
  • Thermostat (recommended while the system is open)
  • Fresh coolant

Replacing only the belt without the water pump and tensioner is a false economy. If the water pump seizes, it will snap the new belt.

Typical Cost in Sri Lanka

  • Timing belt kit (belt + tensioner + pulleys): LKR 25,000–45,000
  • Water pump: LKR 15,000–25,000
  • Total parts: LKR 40,000–70,000 (depending on engine)
  • Labour: LKR 15,000–25,000

Warning Signs of a Failing Belt

  • High-pitched whining or squealing from the engine
  • Visible cracks or fraying on the belt (if accessible)
  • Engine misfires or rough running
  • Difficulty starting

If you notice any of these, do not drive the car. Have it towed to a specialist workshop.
