Understanding European Car Warning Lights — Complete Guide for Sri Lankan Owners
Don't Ignore Your Dashboard
Modern European cars can display over 50 different warning lights. Some are informational, some are urgent, and some mean you should stop driving immediately. Understanding these lights can save you from expensive repairs and dangerous situations on Sri Lankan roads.
Red Warning Lights — Stop Immediately
- Engine Oil Pressure: Oil can icon. Stop the engine immediately. Driving without oil pressure will destroy your engine within minutes. Cost to ignore: LKR 500,000+ for engine rebuild.
- Engine Temperature: Thermometer icon. Pull over and let the engine cool. Common in Sri Lanka's heat, especially in Colombo traffic. Check coolant level when cool.
- Brake System: Exclamation mark in circle. Check brake fluid level. If pedal feels soft, do not drive — call for a tow.
- Battery/Charging: Battery icon. Alternator may have failed. Drive directly to a workshop — you have 15-30 minutes before the battery dies.
Yellow/Amber Warning Lights — Service Soon
- Check Engine (EPC on VW/Audi): Engine outline. Could be anything from a loose fuel cap to a serious sensor failure. Get diagnostic scan within a week.
- ABS Warning: ABS text in circle. Normal brakes still work, but ABS is disabled. Safe to drive carefully to a workshop.
- Tyre Pressure (TPMS): Exclamation mark in tyre shape. Check all tyre pressures. Common after temperature changes in Sri Lanka.
- DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter): Box with dots. Common on Audi/VW TDI and BMW diesel. Take the car for a 20-minute highway drive at 60+ km/h to regenerate.
Informational Lights
- Service Due: Wrench or spanner icon. Scheduled maintenance is due. Not urgent but don't delay more than 1,000 km.
- Glow Plug (Diesel): Coil icon. Normal — wait for it to go off before starting. If it stays on, glow plugs need replacement.
What to Do When a Light Comes On
- Note the colour: Red = stop, Yellow = soon, Green/Blue = informational
- Check your owner's manual for the specific light
- For red lights: pull over safely and call for help
- For yellow lights: book a diagnostic scan within a few days
- Never cover or ignore a warning light
